A discovery of prehistoric fish..

A very primitive fish has been discovered in Indonesia. The coelacanth, thought to be extinct for at least 80 million years, is known to exist around the Comoros Islands near Madagascar, having been rediscovered there in 1938. Scientists believe the species may have the answers to many evolutionary puzzles, but interest in the fish had over the years caused its number to fall, until only 500 known coelacanth were left.

Now, an entirely new population has been discovered living thousands of miles away. A coelacanth was spotted in 1997 by a scientist's wife in a fish market in Manado, Indonesia. Dr. Mark Erdmann of University of California was quoted as saying, "We only managed to take a few photos and have a short interview with the fisherman before it was sold." Colleagues had to wait another year before discovering another in July 1998 off Manado Tua. Scientists are surprised that the coelacanth, which can grow up to 5ft long, had escaped the attention of biologists when the local fishermen seemed to know it well.
